Many Muslim travellers from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia ask the same question before booking: is Vietnam halal-friendly? The short answer is yes, with some planning. Muslims are a small minority in Vietnam, so halal food is not everywhere, but the main tourist cities have halal restaurants and mosques, and a private tour can be planned around your meals and prayer times. This guide explains what to expect and how to plan.
Quick facts for Malaysian travellers
- Visa: Malaysian and Singaporean passport holders can visit Vietnam visa-free for up to 30 days. Check the latest rules for your passport before you travel.
- Muslim community: Vietnam's Muslims include the Cham people, mainly in the Mekong Delta around Chau Doc, and communities in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
- Halal food: easiest to find in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, with options in Da Nang and Phu Quoc. In smaller towns and mountain areas such as Sapa, options are limited.
- Halal meals on tour: with Connek Trip, halal meals can be arranged on request for private tours. Please tell us when you book.

Halal food in Vietnam: what to expect
Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City has the widest choice, with halal restaurants serving Vietnamese, Malaysian and Indian dishes, many of them near Ben Thanh Market and the city centre. You can try halal versions of Vietnamese favourites such as pho and banh mi.
Hanoi
Hanoi has a smaller number of halal restaurants, most of them in and around the Old Quarter. They are a good base for meals before and after day trips to Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh.
Da Nang, Hoi An and Phu Quoc
These beach destinations have a growing number of halal and Muslim-friendly restaurants, as many visitors come from Malaysia and Indonesia. Seafood restaurants are another simple choice; ask for dishes cooked without pork, lard or alcohol.
Sapa and the mountains
Halal restaurants are rare in Sapa. On a private tour, halal meals can be arranged on request; if you travel on your own, seafood, egg and vegetarian dishes are the easiest options, and you can bring snacks from Hanoi.
Dishes to ask about
- Pho: beef pho is common, but the broth and meat are usually not halal unless the restaurant is certified. Choose a halal restaurant for pho.
- Banh mi: standard banh mi often contains pork pate or ham. Ask for chicken, egg or a halal version.
- Spring rolls: fried spring rolls often contain pork. Fresh rolls with shrimp or vegetables are a safer choice.
- Fish sauce: made from fish and salt, and used in almost every Vietnamese dish.
Mosques and prayer
Ho Chi Minh City has several mosques, including the Jamia Al-Muslimin Mosque on Dong Du Street in the city centre. In Hanoi, the Al-Noor Mosque is on Hang Luoc Street in the Old Quarter. Outside the big cities, mosques are rare, so most travellers pray at the hotel. On a private tour, tell your guide your prayer times so the day can include breaks for prayer.
