Sapa or Ha Long Bay? If you are planning a trip to northern Vietnam, this is usually the first decision. Sapa is a mountain town of rice terraces, ethnic minority villages and Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina. Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage seascape of limestone islands that you explore by boat. Both are easy to reach from Hanoi, and with 5 days or more you can do both. Here is how to choose.

Choose Sapa if…
- You love mountains, cool air and green (or golden) rice terraces.
- You want to meet local communities such as the Hmong and Red Dao in their villages.
- You want to stand on Fansipan, 3,143 m, without a hard climb: a cable car takes you near the top.
- You enjoy walking. Village trails are easy to moderate but can be muddy after rain.
The rice terraces are greenest from about May to August and turn golden in September and early October. Winter (December to February) can be very cold, and Fansipan sometimes sees frost or snow.

Choose Ha Long Bay if…
- You want a relaxed trip with little walking, good for families and older travellers.
- You love sea views, boat trips and kayaking.
- You only have a short time: Ha Long Bay works as a day trip from Hanoi.
- You want a special night on board a cruise ship.
Ha Long Bay is beautiful all year. Cruises can be stopped by the port authority during storms, mostly between July and October; with Connek Trip, you then receive a refund for the cruise or we arrange another activity.

Day cruise or overnight cruise?
A day cruise gives you around 5 to 6 hours on the bay with lunch on board and a cave or kayak stop. An overnight cruise lets you see sunset and sunrise on the water, with more time for activities and fewer day-trip boats in the early morning. If you have 6 days, the overnight cruise is worth it.
